“Relevant” Art or Creativity is just what is needed for a specific time and place – and often dissipates as quick as it comes. It provides fuel for the day, but doesn’t set a new destination for your Beneficiary’s travels.

“Post-Relevant” Art and Creativity, however, is always just out of the Beneficiary’s reach. Post-Relevant Art and Creativity will make people’s arms grow in order to reach it; it makes your audience run a little faster, dig a little deeper; and grasp for higher rungs on the ladder.

“Good” art and creativity is never timely, it’s always early.

In any competition, it is always good to see a close but great finish where the competitors are gritting it out down to the wire, digging deep and pushing for something that they know is on the inside. Perhaps they’ve tapped it before, but this is a new foe that is creating a demand for something that’s never been done before. This will be the determining factor for the victor. This is not about luck or chance. No. What I am referring to is the deep seat of one’s will to win. There will be days when the competition is easy. There will be days when the competitor gets the upper hand. But then there will be days when the winning and losing manifest what has actually been being built. It’s the thing that calls to you and tells you to negotiate with your mind, body, emotions and spirit, asking to be released when all else has been attempted. That thing can be called by different names. Whatever you want to call it, just call on it and put a mark in the win column today.

Getting Past Your Limitations

I am learning that everyone comes to a crossroads where they have to admit they have a limitation. This is not a sign of weakness but evidence of inner strength. Don’t be fooled, many people can do the first step and admit, but do not take the next steps to get them beyond their limitation or find the supplement they are lacking. Not taking the steps only puts them back in a place where weakness prevails over the will to succeed and overcome. It’s hard to overcome with a weak will. I see many people in this position and I too have experienced such deficits. It’s that place where there are many anecdotes that overwhelm us or none that have the potency. I find we all get those chances to come back around to deal with the cycle that plagues us. It’s the opportunity we get to deal with the limitation and maybe even in a different situation. I would like to offer this simple anecdote that I am finding to be favorable:

See the reality of the limitation and realize that the human potential is still yet to be completely realized. (Admission and confession is only rivaled by the grace given to overcome)
Learn to be still and “THINK” about what it’s worth to get to the next level
Look, search, read and investigate in order to surround yourself with potential solutions
Build trusted relationships with people who have overcome. This will take some vulnerability on your part. (Friends are great to encourage and build up but usually won’t push you hard enough to breakthrough. That is why you need people in your life who are where you would like to be)
Be diligent
Be willing to adjust your pace
Keep negative people far away from you
Don’t quit even when it hurts
Journal your progress
Set up a rewards system for key milestones

Conditions & Color

I recently spent time with two wonderful people that are fast becoming great friends. They are two unique individuals and they bring much color to this world we live in. It made me think about just that. The color we put into the world. Colors of joy, hope, struggle, difficulty, success, failures, love and so on. But I also know that there are many people who don’t realize they are painting the world with their life. That they daily are illustrating, splashing, applying and smudging the world around them with their color.

The color we put into this world comes from our mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and financial conditions. How we react, respond and live out those conditions will determine your color. I know that their are many ways to live and believe. I would just say to you, take care, and always work to improve your conditions as you daily color the world.

The King & The Warrior

Everyday we run into people that can be very difficult to deal with. We are also faced with difficult situations that can foster opportunities for tempers to flare and attitudes to crest the walls of our emotional thresholds. In any case I would like to offer you this little tip. It is very simple and if practiced will become all the more easily executed in every situation.

The tip I would like to give is…you can either speak to the King (or Queen) in someone or the warrior! To speak to the King/Queen in someone you must choose your words wisely and be sure to not talk down, patronize or use combative words and tone. To speak to the warrior, well, speak in the direct opposite way that you speak to the King. You will most assuredly bring out the warrior in the midst of an already difficult situation. It is up to you to decide if you would rather be right or be in relationship.

Real, Clear and Refreshing!

I recently had the opportunity to spend time with a friend who just needed a friend. Not advice, not answers but just a friend. Someone who was not connected to their everyday life but to who they are as a person. This made me think about all of the people in the world that are going through life and their everyday activities without the safety of an earthly confidant. Someone to be there, be real, be clear and be refreshing. What I discovered in this time with my friend is that, I too am like he is. Sometimes almost invincible, sometimes a product of the daily grind, sometimes king of the hill, and sometimes king of pain. But with all of the sometimes one thing is clear… some and time will all be apart of my everyday and one thing that makes a difference is relationships.

I encourage you to find, build and cultivate your relationships. Not just the ones that get you the money, the pleasure or the opportunities. I am talking about the ones that work best in all situations: laughter, tears, success and failures. Yes, they are real. Yes, they are out there.

That’s What You Say

If you want to say that you are a gobal leader in something, then you must be a global leader. If you are going to say that you are the premier, then you must be the premier. Not because you said it and want it to be true, but because what you say is recognized and can be validated by others. I believe in vision and faith. I believe that you must speak about things that are not as if they already are. However, I also believe that you need to be careful not to put yourself at the head of the table without merit. So many people use words to validate and elevate. I say, show your stuff, be real, be excellent, be “uniKe” (spelled with a “K”) and you won’t have to work so hard to be so convincing.

Build, Build Now, Build Strong, Build Team!

There is nothing better than a team taking shape. When a team begins to function and flow as they should, especially in the toughest of climates, the results far surpass what can be done when you build without the threat of challenge. The threat of true challenge is the best training ground for any team. The prospect of the toughest foe will reveal not only the skills of the team but the heart of the team and it’s belief in what it is they are doing. This challenge is met with high probability of success when the team knows their roles and goals and they do not allow themselves to fall prey to the rules of individuality that so quickly deteriorate the team and all that they can accomplish.

This is the time to deeply define the roles, goals and strategies required by teams in order to fight through tough times with high aptitude and great results. Take the time to identify who is truly a part of your team and build, build now, build strong, build team.

I Predict The Unpredictable

Life is full of things that are predictable. But even within the most predictable things you need to always leave room for the unpredictable. We can all look for scientific information and data that will assist us in our efforts to be more exact and precise but there is still the element of surprise. It is the unexpected, the unintended, the unpredictable. We all want a day that is full of challenge but marked by predictable results and definite outcomes. Well, we are living in a time of the unpredictable. There’s no need to be afraid. This is a time for you and I to keep doing the things that have gotten us certain results, but more so to embrace the troubled waters of what we cannot discern nor predict. We need to take ahold of the opportunity afforded to us and allow ourselves to take this uncharted road that even our mental Tom Tom can’t find. It’s not just a detour, it’s exploration.

The Creative Living Glossary

Welcome to the first Creative Living Post…aka “The Creative Living Glossary”

Well I guess the first myth to dispel here would be the notion that “creativity” is only for “artists”. After working for many years in various fields of, not only arts, but business and community as well, I have come to realize the truth that, for anything to be truly effective and culture-rumbling, it has to employ a high degree of creativity and innovation…

SO…as we begin our journey together, I’m thinking it would be helpful to put together a short glossary of terms that we will use frequently as we endure and explore creative living…beneficiary [ben-uh-fish-ee-er-ee]

This is who you work for. This is the person who is judge and jury on your creation. It is a slightly less gauche term than “customer” or “client”, and tends to give them more credit as well. This is the person who stands to benefit from your creation if it is a success, or tends to hate it if it stinks.

goosebumps [goos-bŭmps]
I literally get these when something is right, true, and has the potential to impact beneficiaries and create atmosphere. A chill in the spine, a rush in the heart – whatever it does for you, a great, creative idea will always tickle your eyes or ears – the “goosebumps” are always there to let you know you are on to an idea that people are going to NEED. So always be sure to “follow the goosebumps” and NEVER doubt them…

rumble-strips [ruhm-buhl-strĭps]
These are in diametric opposition to “the goosebumps”. Rumble-strips are those things you hit (and feel) when you fall asleep while driving and veer too far to the right or left. They are basically there to inform you that something “not-good” is about to happen – so WAKE UP! “Rumble-Strips” are the feelings you get inside when an idea is lame, lazy, dead in the water, just plain dumb, and is basically not-gonna-work. When you run across an idea that is leaving you cold, uninspired, or indifferent (or even just “ok”), you need to acknowledge the repetitive groan of the rumble-strip and heed it’s warning to GET BACK ON THE ROAD!

This is you my friend. And for it we will use the actual definition found in the dictionary:
1. a person having extraordinary talent or ability.
2. a marvelous example.
3. something wonderful or marvelous; a wonder.
4. (Archaic) something extraordinary regarded as of prophetic significance.

Well, that is where we will start! I’m hoping even just this short glossary of terms that I use in my head when creating (and that we will use along the way) will begin to inspire you about yourself and your beneficiaries, and get you into a smooth streaming groove of “Creative Living”….
