You Wear It Well

I love seeing everyday people wearing the jerseys, caps and jackets of their favorite sports team and sports heros. True fans wear the branded apparel with pride. Even when the team is struggling, the true fans support their team and players without waiver. They will defend their team and believe that every new season will usher in the potential of a better record or even a championship. They believe that the coaching and the players are going to work together to improve not just because of the fans but because they want to succeed.

Bad years can always be expected. But what if we wore the team jersey with pride that demonstrated real support, not jumping ship? No one improves by running away from legitimate challenges. You can always find great teams and great players. What about being one of the reasons a team is great and you being one of those great players? Don’t be a fair-weather fan, and even still a fair-weather player.

4 Steps to Overcome Obstacles & Problems

One of my greatest joys in life is finding solutions to everyday problems and obstacles. I have always been a firm believer that one of the highest gifts available to human beings is the ability to see a problem and then identify and implement the best solution. There are certain basic steps that I take that have proven to be effective in the process. Here they are:

RECOGNIZE THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM – You might be surprised how difficult it is for people to admit that something is wrong. Denial is a major roadblock toward success and resolution.
GET COUNSEL – The greatest asset we have is the counsel that is available to us from people that have overcome difficult situations. Accessibility to sound counsel and advice is vital to problem-solving. (If you do not have advisors and counselors, I recommend you get them. MOVE BEYOND PEER COUNSEL.)
IDENTIFY & IMPLEMENT THE STEPS NEEDED FOR CORRECTION – With solid counsel and some think time, you should be able to work on the steps necessary to move toward overcoming your problems. Just think of being those CSI guys. They show up and have to recreate exactly what took place in order to solve the problem. So it should be for you, too. See the problem and work backwards to find where the problem actually began.
DO THE WORK NECESSARY – In other words, be proactive and do something about it. If you think it’s bad not to try and find a solution, you will find it is far worse to have the solution and not put it to work!

Include Scenarios Into Your Plan

If you want to succeed you have to plan for it! However, in planning to succeed, it is of utmost importance that you take into account the less than desirable scenarios that can prove to be fatal to the perfect plan. You see, one cannot just create a formula for success that ignores the probability of some sort of disruption. To do so is to believe that life is the equivalent to having a genie in a bottle or wishes without wisdom, resolve or hard work. I encourage everyone to spend time walking themselves through the “what if” scenarios that include obstacles. Obstacles that can lead you to a better planning process and develop irreplaceable characteristics that are found in the lives of successful people.

THAT THING!

In any competition, it is always good to see a close but great finish where the competitors are gritting it out down to the wire, digging deep and pushing for something that they know is on the inside. Perhaps they’ve tapped it before, but this is a new foe that is creating a demand for something that’s never been done before. This will be the determining factor for the victor. This is not about luck or chance. No. What I am referring to is the deep seat of one’s will to win. There will be days when the competition is easy. There will be days when the competitor gets the upper hand. But then there will be days when the winning and losing manifest what has actually been being built. It’s the thing that calls to you and tells you to negotiate with your mind, body, emotions and spirit, asking to be released when all else has been attempted. That thing can be called by different names. Whatever you want to call it, just call on it and put a mark in the win column today.

The King & The Warrior

Everyday we run into people that can be very difficult to deal with. We are also faced with difficult situations that can foster opportunities for tempers to flare and attitudes to crest the walls of our emotional thresholds. In any case I would like to offer you this little tip. It is very simple and if practiced will become all the more easily executed in every situation.

The tip I would like to give is…you can either speak to the King (or Queen) in someone or the warrior! To speak to the King/Queen in someone you must choose your words wisely and be sure to not talk down, patronize or use combative words and tone. To speak to the warrior, well, speak in the direct opposite way that you speak to the King. You will most assuredly bring out the warrior in the midst of an already difficult situation. It is up to you to decide if you would rather be right or be in relationship.

Real, Clear and Refreshing!

I recently had the opportunity to spend time with a friend who just needed a friend. Not advice, not answers but just a friend. Someone who was not connected to their everyday life but to who they are as a person. This made me think about all of the people in the world that are going through life and their everyday activities without the safety of an earthly confidant. Someone to be there, be real, be clear and be refreshing. What I discovered in this time with my friend is that, I too am like he is. Sometimes almost invincible, sometimes a product of the daily grind, sometimes king of the hill, and sometimes king of pain. But with all of the sometimes one thing is clear… some and time will all be apart of my everyday and one thing that makes a difference is relationships.

I encourage you to find, build and cultivate your relationships. Not just the ones that get you the money, the pleasure or the opportunities. I am talking about the ones that work best in all situations: laughter, tears, success and failures. Yes, they are real. Yes, they are out there.

That’s What You Say

If you want to say that you are a gobal leader in something, then you must be a global leader. If you are going to say that you are the premier, then you must be the premier. Not because you said it and want it to be true, but because what you say is recognized and can be validated by others. I believe in vision and faith. I believe that you must speak about things that are not as if they already are. However, I also believe that you need to be careful not to put yourself at the head of the table without merit. So many people use words to validate and elevate. I say, show your stuff, be real, be excellent, be “uniKe” (spelled with a “K”) and you won’t have to work so hard to be so convincing.

Build, Build Now, Build Strong, Build Team!

There is nothing better than a team taking shape. When a team begins to function and flow as they should, especially in the toughest of climates, the results far surpass what can be done when you build without the threat of challenge. The threat of true challenge is the best training ground for any team. The prospect of the toughest foe will reveal not only the skills of the team but the heart of the team and it’s belief in what it is they are doing. This challenge is met with high probability of success when the team knows their roles and goals and they do not allow themselves to fall prey to the rules of individuality that so quickly deteriorate the team and all that they can accomplish.

This is the time to deeply define the roles, goals and strategies required by teams in order to fight through tough times with high aptitude and great results. Take the time to identify who is truly a part of your team and build, build now, build strong, build team.

I Predict The Unpredictable

Life is full of things that are predictable. But even within the most predictable things you need to always leave room for the unpredictable. We can all look for scientific information and data that will assist us in our efforts to be more exact and precise but there is still the element of surprise. It is the unexpected, the unintended, the unpredictable. We all want a day that is full of challenge but marked by predictable results and definite outcomes. Well, we are living in a time of the unpredictable. There’s no need to be afraid. This is a time for you and I to keep doing the things that have gotten us certain results, but more so to embrace the troubled waters of what we cannot discern nor predict. We need to take ahold of the opportunity afforded to us and allow ourselves to take this uncharted road that even our mental Tom Tom can’t find. It’s not just a detour, it’s exploration.

Networking Modes, Methods and Motivations

I am still amazed at the amount of people who miss the true meaning of networking. They go to every meeting collecting business cards from individuals at Chamber meetings, social networking meetings, trade shows and on and on. They make small talk, ask a few questions, then load you up with an ear full of themselves and say those words, “Let’s get together sometime and talk more about how we can help one another!” Sure. This is the same person that will take the business card they received from you and think that they now have your permission to add you to their eblast list of things you do not wish to see nor would agree to sign up for. For the majority of people, this is not the outcome that was expected from attending the networking event. Whether you are a business owner, manager, leader, community organizer, or student body president, this should not be your mode, method or motivation for networking.

Here are some rules you should follow:

If given a business card, ask if you have their permission to send them your eblast or other forms of communication. Anything else is unsolicited and will probably be placed in the virtual trash or circular file cabinet.
When participating in networking events or activities be willing to hear more about the services of others. You will prove yourself to be of greater value being a person who has more information about others and their products or services than just pushing yours.
Be willing to connect people to solutions that go beyond what you have to offer and you will be surprised at the interest people will take in you. First as a person, second in what it is that you do and offer.
Present yourself as a difference maker and not a money hunter. If you are just hunting money it will very soon become obvious.
Don’t talk badly about competition. If people buy from you because of a negative report you gave to them about your competition it won’t be long before they leave you too at the first sign of something negative.
Know your stuff before you start talking about it. Don’t be one of those people that wing it and make it up as you go. Confidence is important and will present you as wise. However, random talk will show you to be desperate and lacking direction.
Take a genuine interest in the people you meet and talk with regardless of outcomes. The power of networking is not getting stuff. It is getting to meet extraordinary people that do things we cannot do and need things we have to offer.

Time will be kind and rewards favorable to those who subscribe to better networking modes, methods and motivations.
